About Britton

My name is Britton Staley and I am from Nashville, Tennessee. I have always had a fascination with ceramics since I was a kid. Throughout my time at Harpeth Hall School, I have taken Art I, Ceramics I, II, and III classes, and I have grown further as an artist due to taking AP Art and Design my senior year.
My sustained investigation followed the question: how can the element of light be played with and shown through different sculptural patterns? Throughout the year I have experimented with making pieces that will hold or use physical light. Moreover, the sculptural styles of the pieces force the viewer to spectate the pieces through various entry points into the hollow center of the piece. It is about the journey one takes to find the light within life, and the light in my pieces represents the idea of optimism and hope. Continuing, I believe playing with patterns and abstraction of my pieces help to illuminate not only physical light but also the ideas of what light is as well.
Furthermore, I find that my first piece of the year, Dismantle Collection, formed the base in which I have built off of for the rest of my pieces. I based the piece off of the idea of taking apart. The three parts of the overall piece all interconnect through the cutout pieces which were removed then attached to the other parts, creating a pattern which all connects smoothly. Overall, my sustained investigation of light and its connection to pattern helped me to grow as an artist by understanding the depth within an idea, but also having the ability to show this depth through physical pieces.
